夜、部屋の明かりを落として、ウィスキーのグラスを置く。そんな時に、こいつのローズウッドの深い木目がふと目に入ると、それだけで今日という一日が終わった実感が湧いてくる。

ハンス・ウェグナーが手がけた「RY25」。ただのサイドボードだと思ったら大間違いだ。タンブールドアと呼ばれるあの蛇腹をスライドさせる時の、吸い付くような、それでいて乾いた独特の感触。あれはもう、家具というよりは精密機械に近い。

外側は重厚なローズウッドの「夜」を纏いながら、扉を開ければオーク材の清々しい「朝」が待っている。その内外のコントラストが最高にニクいし、スチールのハンドルプレートが、このデカい塊に絶妙な緊張感を与えている。

旅先で良いホテルに泊まるのもいいけれど、自分の部屋に、こんな風に沈黙を守りながらも圧倒的な存在感を放つ相棒がいる。それこそが、一番の贅沢なんじゃないかと思う。一生モノっていう言葉は、きっとこういう家具のためにあるんだろうな。
