1960年、デンマーク。アルネ・ヤコブセンが建築から内装、カトラリーに至るまでその全精力を注ぎ込んだ「SASロイヤルホテル」。その壮大なトータルデザインの思想を、最も象徴的な形で体現しているのがこの『AJ ロイヤル』です。

球体を半分に切り出したような潔い半円のドーム。その頂部には、数学的な正確さで同心円状のスリット（ルーバー）が刻まれています。この意匠は単なる装飾ではなく、直下のテーブルを照らす強い光を確保しながら、天井方向へも柔らかな光を逃がし、空間全体の陰影を調律するための「光学装置」としての必然から生まれたものです。

無機質なメタルの質感と、そこから漏れ出す計算し尽くされた光のリズム。ヤコブセンが追求した「機能が形を決定づける」というモダニズムの真髄が、このシンプルなシェルの中に凝縮されています。
