1946年、ヘルシンキ。学生寮「ドムス・アカデミカ」のためにイルマリ・タピオヴァーラが設計したこの椅子は、戦後フィンランドの「知的な自立」を象徴する、モダニズムの金字塔だ。

最大の見どころは、デスクにしっかりと引き寄せられるよう短く設計された、特徴的なアームの造形。長時間の思索や学習を支えるための合理的な判断が、結果としてこの椅子に唯一無二のキャラクターと、空間における鮮烈なグラフィックを与えている。三次元的に成形されたバーチ材の座面と背もたれは、身体の重心を優しく、かつ的確にガイドしてくれる「思考のためのコックピット」のようです。

今回の個体は、1960年代にケラヴァン・プーテオリスース社で製造された一台。半世紀以上の時を経て手に入れた、バーチ材特有の深い飴色のパティーナ。塗装の擦れや木肌の質感ゆらぎは、単なる古さではなく、この椅子が経てきた膨大な対話と時間の集積であり、現代の住空間に確かな「文脈（コンテクスト）」をもたらしてくれます。

機能を極限まで研ぎ澄ましながら、人の体温を決して忘れない。タピオヴァーラが辿り着いた、民主的デザインの到達点。ただそこにあるだけで、部屋の知的な解像度を劇的に高めてくれる一台です。
