壁際に押しやるのではなく、部屋の「中心」に置くべきデスクがある。カイ・クリスチャンセンが手がけたこの『model.54』、通称キドニーデスクは、その有機的な曲線によって空間の規律を鮮やかに、そして優雅に解体してみせる一台です。

最大の見どころは、右側に配されたタンブールドア（蛇腹）の意匠。滑らかに弧を描きながら吸い込まれるように開閉するその機構には、1950年代のデンマーク家具工芸が到達した、緻密なクラフトマンシップの粋が宿っています。左側のドロワーに配された、彼らしい円形の彫り込み取っ手。この「円」と「曲線」のリズムが、重厚なチーク材の塊に、知的な軽やかさと色気を与えています。

背面まで美しく仕上げられたその佇まいは、どの角度から眺めても一分の隙もない建築的な美しさを湛えている。天板の独特なシェイプは、座る者を優しく包み込み、まるで自分だけの「知的なコックピット」に身を置くような高揚感をもたらしてくれるはずです。
