「良いデザインを、すべての人へ」。イルマリ・タピオヴァーラが掲げたこの民主的な理想を、最も端正なかたちで具現化したのが、1955年に誕生した『ファネットチェア』だ。

ベースにあるのは、古くから愛されてきた伝統的なウィンザーチェア。それをタピオヴァーラは、モダンな都市居住の言葉へと鮮やかに翻訳し、極限までシェイプを削ぎ落とした。黒く塗装されたビーチ材のフレームと、温かなチーク材の座面が描くグラフィカルな対比。6本のスポークがもたらす視覚的な「抜け」は、空間に心地よい規律と、知的な余白を添えてくれる。

特筆すべきは、驚くほどの軽量設計と、身体に沿うよう三次元的に成形された座面のカーブ。機能がそのまま形を決定づけたその佇まいは、発表から半世紀以上の時を経た今なお、現代のインテリアにおいて鮮烈な解像度を保ち続けている。
